| About Bansko
Bansko is famous for its well-preserved traditions and culture, its original Revival-period architecture and its local culinary specialties (Banski shashlik, Banska kapama). The visitors of this mountain town have always sited captive of the spirit of Banskalii (Bansko residents), wishing they could once again return to the heart of Pirin, to become one with nature - something everyone craves for in their hurried everyday lives.
Bansko has been declared a unique town of international importance to commercial tourism (1979). Apart from the beautiful Pirin Mountain and the numerous places of natural beauty the town also has to offer many historic sites. Remains of ancient fortresses have been preserved in the Staroto Gradishte (Stankale) locality about 4 km southwest of the town and also in the Yulen locality (downstream Demyanitsa river). Thracian tumuli have been uncovered in the vicinity of Staroto Gradishte. Archaeological works have unearthed a 2nd century B.C. burial site containing a set of bronze surgical instruments, remains of medicinal preparations etc. in the centuries-old Dobrokyovitsa locality (west of Bansko). Scientists assume that a medieval settlement used to exist in the Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) locality (northeast of town). Southeast of Bansko are remains of the late-medieval single-nave churches "St George" and "St Elijah.
Conditions For Ski Sports
From December till April of picturesque, snow slopes and ski runs of 56 km are ready to accept you.
The lift "Doppelmeyer" with cabins on 8 persons connects city to station "Banderishka Polyana". Length is more than 6 km. About the First lift station is situated parking with capacity of 600 cars.
From this year one from the ski runs are lighted in the extent of 7 km from "Banderishka Polyana" to the lowermost station. Two new seat lifts from "Banderishka Polyana" up to "Kolarsky Pat" and from "The Iron Bridge" up to "Plato". For beginners there is small lift and specially equipped line nearby "Alberto Tomba".
For children from 4 till 7 years there is a kindergarten at station "Banderishka Polyana" with the children's lift, the ski roundabouts, moving paths and other entertainments.
The park for snowboarders is located on "Plato". It has been developed by Resort Complex Bansko together with Committee of Snowboarders and the Bulgarian Ski Association. Two runs in the general length of 600 m and various degree of complexity. Capacity is 30-40 persons. The runs are equipped by all necessary for snowboarders.
For fans of an extreme are places for off-track (outside of ski runs) skiing between top Todorka and Plato. The risk of skiing in such places is very great and not many are ready to try.
